Public Safety Considerations for Lindane
Lindane is a medication that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the second-line management of two serious and widespread health conditions—scabies and lice. The FDA recognizes that all medications, including lindane, are associated with some risks. Repeatedly, the FDA has determined that lindane medications, when used properly, have benefits that outweigh potential risks. (See Lindane Regulatory History)
Similarly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has concluded consistently that the medical use of lindane poses no significant threat to public health or the environment when used as currently directed. (See Lindane Regulatory Viewpoints) Both regulatory agencies agree that the majority of serious adverse events associated with lindane medications have resulted from product misuse. More recent advances in lindane packaging and lindane product labeling have dramatically minimized this risk and increased the margin of safety for these necessary prescription therapies.
